Arts for a nonsensical world
Gallery: Bastian Gallery
Timing: showing until Aug 20 , 2020
Very lucky to catch this #HansHoffmam show ‘Fury: Painting after the War’ @bastian.gallery before it closed. Shown in the UK for the first time, these paintings were created between 1942-46. We see both angular abstractions and supple and sinuous pieces which nod to his figurative work, as well as his use of bold colours and darker tones which highlight his mastery of chromatic relationships.
These foretokens of abstract expressionism serve as reminders of just how many artists Hoffman has influenced, from three of the greatest female artists – Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, and Joan Mitchell – to such contemporary artists as Howard Hodgkin and John Hoyland.
Said Hoffman: ‘Creation is dominated by three absolutely different factors: First, nature, which works upon us by its laws; second, the artist, who creates a spiritual contact with nature and his materials; third, the medium of expression through which the artist translates his inner world.’
